New Delhi, October 27, 2026: Whirlpool of India has launched its new Luxuriem range of four-door refrigerators, introducing what the company claims is India’s first Freshness Detection Technology powered by its proprietary 6th Sense AI. The Made-in-India innovation is designed to help households reduce food wastage by detecting early signs of over-ripening in stored fruits and vegetables.
The technology aims to address a common problem in Indian kitchens, where consumers purchase fresh produce in bulk and store it in refrigerators, often forgetting about items until they begin to spoil.
AI monitors freshness every 10 seconds
At the centre of Whirlpool’s new technology is the proprietary iFresh Sensor Engine, integrated directly into the refrigerator’s crisper drawer.
The sensor monitors ethylene, a naturally occurring gas released by fruits and vegetables as they ripen.
Powered by 6th Sense AI, the refrigerator scans stored produce every 10 seconds. When the system detects increased ethylene levels associated with over-ripening, it sends an alert, allowing users to check their food before potential spoilage.
The company says this feature transforms conventional refrigeration by helping consumers monitor freshness rather than simply storing food at lower temperatures.
Designed for different fruits and vegetables
Whirlpool has developed its Full-Spectrum Produce Detection technology in collaboration with food scientists to accommodate different ripening patterns.
The system is designed to monitor produce including apples, pears, kiwis, avocados and peaches, along with vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and lettuce.
A real-time tracking interface also allows users to check freshness status directly on the refrigerator.
AI learns from consumer behaviour
Another feature of the technology is its adaptive learning capability.
When users receive an alert, they can inspect their produce and reset the notification. The AI system records this feedback and adjusts future alert thresholds according to household preferences.
Nakul Tewari, Vice President of Marketing at Whirlpool of India, said the innovation addresses a major consumer concern by helping households identify changes in freshness before food becomes visibly spoiled.
Price and availability in India
The expanded Whirlpool Luxuriem four-door refrigerator range will be offered in three capacities: 645 litres, 651 litres and 654 litres.
Prices start at ₹98,000, with availability planned across leading retail stores and online platforms throughout India.
The company says the technology reflects its focus on practical AI applications that make everyday household tasks more convenient while helping minimise avoidable food wastage.
