New Delhi, October 29, 2026: India’s largest airline, IndiGo, is considering increasing airfares to offset rising fuel costs and protect profitability after reporting a consolidated net loss of Rs 1,879 crore in the September quarter of FY27.
The airline’s latest financial results showed strong revenue growth despite continued pressure from higher operating expenses and foreign exchange losses.
IndiGo Reports Rs 1,879 Crore Loss
IndiGo’s parent company, InterGlobe Aviation, reported a consolidated net loss of Rs 1,879 crore for the July–September quarter, compared with a loss of Rs 2,063 crore in the corresponding period last year.
The airline’s revenue from operations increased 25.9% year-on-year to Rs 23,364 crore, compared with Rs 18,555 crore in Q2 FY26.
Meanwhile, EBITDA surged 229.1% to Rs 1,907 crore from Rs 580 crore a year earlier, indicating an improvement in operating performance.
Rising Fuel Costs Put Pressure on Earnings
According to the report, higher fuel expenses continued to affect IndiGo’s profitability during the quarter.
Despite strong revenue growth and improved operating earnings, the airline remained in the red due largely to foreign exchange losses.
The company is now evaluating fare increases to help recover additional costs and support its financial performance.
IndiGo CEO Signals Higher Ticket Prices
IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers indicated that passengers could face higher ticket prices as the airline looks to offset rising fuel costs.
The proposed increase would help the company manage higher operating expenses while maintaining its profitability outlook.
However, the report did not specify the exact percentage of the potential fare hike or when revised ticket prices might take effect.
Airline Plans Capacity Expansion
Despite financial pressures, IndiGo is continuing with its expansion plans.
The airline intends to increase capacity by approximately 5% in the coming quarter, reflecting its focus on expanding operations and meeting travel demand.
Higher passenger traffic and improved operational efficiency could help support revenue growth in the coming months.
What It Means for Passengers
If IndiGo implements a fare increase, travellers could face higher ticket prices on affected routes.
However, actual airfare changes will depend on factors including demand, competition, fuel prices and the airline’s pricing strategy.
The potential fare revision comes as IndiGo seeks to balance capacity expansion with rising costs and continued pressure on profitability.
