Kolkata, October 29, 2026: Promoters continue to play a crucial role in shaping businesses in emerging markets such as India, where investors often place considerable trust in the individuals behind companies, Vedanta founder and Chairman Anil Agarwal said on Thursday.
Highlighting the differences between emerging and developed economies, Agarwal said that founders and promoters remain closely associated with their businesses in countries like India. However, he stressed that companies must gradually strengthen professional management structures as they expand.
Promoters Build Investor Confidence
“In emerging markets, the face of the promoter is important,” Agarwal said, explaining the significance of entrepreneurs in building businesses and attracting investors.
According to him, much of India’s corporate ecosystem has developed around individual entrepreneurs and family-owned enterprises. These founders have played a direct role in establishing businesses, shaping their growth strategies and earning shareholders’ confidence.
How Developed Markets Operate Differently
Agarwal pointed out that corporate structures in developed economies such as Europe and the United States operate differently.
“In developed markets such as Europe and America, shareholders and management are two different entities,” he said.
Unlike India’s predominantly founder-driven business environment, many companies in developed economies maintain a clearer distinction between ownership and day-to-day management.
Professional Management Essential for Growth
While recognising the importance of promoters, Agarwal emphasised that professional leadership becomes increasingly necessary as businesses grow.
He said professionally managed organisations can improve operational efficiency, strengthen corporate governance and support sustainable expansion.
“Professionally, by people, for the people,” Agarwal remarked, highlighting his approach to business management.
How Vedanta Balances Ownership and Management
Referring to Vedanta’s organisational structure, Agarwal said the group’s listed and unlisted businesses are managed by professional leadership teams.
These teams are responsible for executing business strategies and managing operations, while promoters focus on providing broader strategic direction.
The approach, he suggested, allows companies to benefit from the founder’s long-term vision while relying on experienced professionals for business execution.
Challenges for Family-Owned Businesses
Agarwal also highlighted a major challenge facing India’s family-controlled conglomerates: balancing promoter influence with professional governance.
As businesses expand across sectors and generations, building strong management institutions becomes essential for maintaining investor confidence and ensuring long-term stability.
His remarks underline the growing importance of professional leadership in India’s evolving corporate landscape.
