Apple has begun generating significant revenue from software development and technology operations in India, signalling a shift beyond local manufacturing as the country emerges as an important global engineering and support hub for the iPhone maker.
Kolkata — Apple has started reporting revenue from software development activities in India, marking a deeper expansion of its operations beyond device manufacturing and assembly.
According to the report, the US technology major generated around ₹650 crore in FY26 through its recently established subsidiary, Apple Operations India, as it expanded into technology research and development, engineering and global support functions.
The development indicates that India is becoming increasingly important not only as a manufacturing base for Apple products but also as part of the company’s wider technology and engineering ecosystem.
Financial performance of Apple Operations India improved sharply during FY26.
The company’s total income increased to ₹1,414 crore in FY26 from ₹318 crore in FY25.
Expenditure also rose substantially to ₹1,276 crore from ₹279 crore as the company scaled operations.
Despite higher costs, profit after tax increased to ₹103 crore from ₹28.6 crore in the previous financial year.
The sharp increase in income and profit suggests Apple is rapidly building its operational capabilities in India.
The company has already expanded local manufacturing significantly through contract manufacturers and suppliers producing iPhones and other components in the country.
The latest numbers show that Apple is now also building a larger presence in areas such as software development, engineering research and global support services.
This could position India among Apple’s important global engineering hubs over time.
The expansion also reflects a broader trend among multinational technology companies that are increasingly using India for high-value functions such as research, software development, product engineering and global capability centres.
India offers a large pool of technology professionals, a growing electronics ecosystem and relatively competitive operating costs, making it attractive for global technology companies.
Apple’s widening presence could also support the development of a larger ecosystem of suppliers, technology partners and skilled professionals around its India operations.
While manufacturing remains a major part of Apple’s India strategy, the growing revenue from software and technology-related operations suggests the company is gradually building a more diversified business footprint in the country.
