Government Launches AI-Powered NMMS App to Prevent Fake Attendance, Protect Rural Workers’ Wages
New Delhi, October 24, 2026: Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has launched an upgraded version of the National Mobile Monitoring System (NMMS) app, introducing advanced security features to improve attendance verification and protect wage payments under the VB-G RAM G rural employment scheme.
The upgraded application, developed with technical support from IIT Madras and other technical agencies, uses artificial intelligence-based face verification, stronger device security and offline attendance recording to address fraudulent entries and connectivity challenges.
Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi on October 23, Chouhan said the government’s priority was to provide employment to rural workers while ensuring transparency in the utilisation of public funds.
46 Crore Person-Days of Employment Generated
According to the Ministry of Rural Development, the VB-G RAM G scheme has generated nearly 46 crore person-days of employment since its implementation across rural areas began on July 1, 2026.
Work has been undertaken at 31.23 lakh worksites across more than 2.41 lakh Gram Panchayats.
Over 3.65 crore workers belonging to 2.89 crore rural households have received employment under the programme.
Of the total employment generated, approximately 40 crore person-days have been recorded through face authentication.
The Centre has allocated ₹95,692 crore for the scheme in FY2026–27, while the total provision, including states’ contributions, exceeds ₹1.51 lakh crore.
AI Face Verification to Prevent Fraud
The upgraded NMMS app includes Google Play Integrity checks, secure data transmission, anti-cloning safeguards and AI-powered liveness detection.
These features help verify that attendance is recorded by genuine workers rather than through photographs or fraudulent applications.
Nine states, including Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan, have achieved 100% face-authenticated attendance recording at worksites.
Offline Attendance Facility Introduced
The government has also introduced offline attendance recording for rural worksites facing poor network connectivity.
Attendance can be uploaded once internet access becomes available, following the prescribed procedure.
An exception mechanism has been provided for elderly workers, persons with disabilities and workers facing genuine authentication difficulties.
The system also uses AI-based photo duplication checks, physical work measurements and Direct Benefit Transfer to strengthen wage payment transparency.
Farmer IDs Near 11-Crore Target
Chouhan also announced that India has created 10.997 crore Farmer IDs, just 30,000 short of the government’s 11-crore target.
The milestone is expected to be achieved well before the December 2027 deadline.
The initiative aims to improve farmers’ access to government schemes and technology-enabled agricultural services.
