The Central Government has announced a major festive benefit for railway employees. The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved a Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) equivalent to 78 days’ wages for eligible railway staff on October 14, 2026.
The decision will benefit approximately 11.40 lakh non-gazetted employees working across Indian Railways. The government has approved a total expenditure of ₹2,009.61 crore for the bonus payment.
According to the official announcement, eligible employees can receive a maximum bonus of ₹17,951.
How Much Bonus Will Railway Employees Receive?
The government has approved a bonus equivalent to 78 days’ wages, subject to the prescribed calculation rules and maximum payment limit.
The maximum amount payable to an eligible railway employee is ₹17,951.
However, this does not mean every railway employee will automatically receive the full amount. The actual bonus will depend on the applicable eligibility and calculation rules.
The Productivity Linked Bonus is generally paid before the Durga Puja and Dussehra festive season.
Which Railway Employees Will Get the Bonus?
The bonus will be provided to eligible non-gazetted railway employees across several categories.
These include:
- Loco Pilots
- Station Masters
- Track Maintainers
- Train Managers (Guards)
- Supervisors
- Technicians and Technician Helpers
- Pointsmen
- Ministerial Staff
- Other eligible Group C employees
The announcement specifically covers eligible non-gazetted employees. It does not extend the bonus to all railway employees regardless of their employment category.
Why Has the Government Approved the Bonus?
The government said the decision recognises the strong performance of Indian Railways during the financial year 2025-26.
During this period, Indian Railways transported a record 1,670 million tonnes of freight and carried nearly 7.41 billion passengers.
The government stated that the bonus is intended to reward employees for their contribution and encourage continued improvements in railway performance.
When Will Railway Employees Receive the Bonus?
Indian Railways traditionally distributes the Productivity Linked Bonus before the Durga Puja and Dussehra holidays.
The Cabinet announcement confirms the approval of the payment but does not specify an exact date on which the money will be credited to employees’ bank accounts.
Employees should follow official communications from their railway divisions or departments for payment-related information.
Is the Railway Bonus Different From Salary?
Yes. The Productivity Linked Bonus is an additional payment linked to railway performance and employee eligibility.
It is separate from regular monthly salary and other applicable allowances.
The announcement does not involve any revision to employees’ basic pay, Dearness Allowance or other salary components.
What Does This Mean for Railway Employees?
The Cabinet decision provides an additional financial benefit to eligible railway employees during the festive period.
With a maximum payment of ₹17,951 and a total government allocation exceeding ₹2,000 crore, the bonus will benefit more than 11 lakh railway workers and their families.
The announcement is particularly significant for operational staff, including loco pilots, track maintainers, technicians and station masters, who contribute to the daily functioning of India’s railway network.
