BrahMos Becomes Key Driver of India’s Defence Exports
New Delhi, October 23, 2026: BrahMos Aerospace CEO and Managing Director Dr Jaiteerth Joshi has said that the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile has emerged as a leading product in India’s defence export strategy, supported by rising international demand and its combat performance during Operation Sindoor in May 2025.
Speaking about the missile system’s growing global presence, Joshi said BrahMos had established itself as a battle-tested weapon after being deployed by the Indian Armed Forces against targets in Pakistan.
According to the company, the missile was used during Operation Sindoor to strike strategic military installations, including the Nur Khan airbase in Pakistan. Its performance has strengthened international interest in India’s indigenous defence capabilities.
BrahMos Exports Expected to Cross $600 Million
BrahMos Aerospace secured its first major international export order in 2022, with the Philippines becoming its first overseas customer.
The company has since expanded its international presence, with agreements involving Indonesia and Vietnam.
Joshi said BrahMos was now at the forefront of India’s military export strategy, with its operational performance providing additional confidence to prospective international buyers.
Orders and deliveries involving the three Southeast Asian countries are expected to push BrahMos exports beyond $600 million.
The development comes as India’s overall defence exports have reportedly reached ₹38,400 crore, reflecting annual growth of 62.7%.
BrahMos-NG Prototype Expected by 2027–28
BrahMos Aerospace is also working on its next-generation missile system, BrahMos-NG.
The new missile is being developed as a smaller, lighter and stealthier version of the existing supersonic cruise missile.
Joshi said the company expects to develop its first prototype by 2027 or 2028.
The new system will incorporate higher indigenous content, advanced materials and modern technologies. It is expected to strengthen India’s air-launched strike capabilities.
India Plans 1,500-Km BrahMos Missile
Another major project under consideration is a longer-range BrahMos missile capable of striking targets at distances of up to 1,500 kilometres.
The company has already conducted range-extension tests from land, sea and air platforms, demonstrating capabilities beyond the missile’s original 290-km range.
However, Joshi clarified that the proposed 1,500-km variant remains at the conceptual stage, with discussions continuing with the company’s Russian joint venture partner.
Production Capacity and Supply Chain Expansion
To meet growing domestic and international demand, BrahMos Aerospace is strengthening its production network and supply chain.
Its manufacturing facilities in Hyderabad, Nagpur, Pilani and Lucknow are working to fulfil existing orders from the Indian Armed Forces.
The company also plans to expand its supplier base and accelerate research into technologies required for future missile systems.
Separately, the Ministry of Defence signed a contract with BrahMos Aerospace on October 6 for fire control systems and launchers for Indian Navy ships.
The project requires at least 68% indigenous content and is expected to support Indian manufacturers, including micro, small and medium enterprises.
With rising international demand, new missile development programmes and expanded manufacturing capabilities, BrahMos Aerospace aims to strengthen India’s position in the global defence equipment market.
