Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Arvind Limited’s new garment manufacturing facility in Varanasi on October 25, marking a fresh development for Uttar Pradesh’s textile industry and local employment.
The facility, located in the Mirzamurad area of Varanasi, has been developed with an estimated investment of ₹150 crore. The project is expected to strengthen manufacturing activity in Purvanchal, expand the region’s apparel production capabilities and create employment opportunities for local residents. The plant is spread across approximately seven to eight acres and is designed to manufacture sportswear, undergarments and other garments.
A key focus of the facility is employment for women. According to news agency reports, more than 300 women have already been recruited and are undergoing training. The company plans to expand production capacity in subsequent phases, potentially creating further employment opportunities as operations develop.
During the inauguration, Modi interacted with women receiving training at the facility and spoke with company officials about manufacturing processes, fabric quality and production activities. The initiative is intended to connect locally manufactured garments with domestic and international markets, building on Arvind Limited’s established presence in the textile and apparel sector.
The facility could also support skill development in the region by providing workers with experience in modern garment manufacturing. Its longer-term economic impact will depend on production expansion, recruitment and the growth of supplier and logistics networks around the plant.
The inauguration comes as Uttar Pradesh seeks to attract industrial investment beyond its established manufacturing centres. For Varanasi and neighbouring districts, the project represents an opportunity to strengthen the local manufacturing base while creating additional pathways into organised employment.
