Air India and Air India Express have increased fuel surcharges on domestic and select international routes as higher aviation turbine fuel prices raise operating costs for airlines.
New Delhi, October 11 — Air India and Air India Express have revised fuel surcharges on domestic and select international flights, with domestic passengers now paying up to ₹1,200 extra and some overseas routes seeing significantly higher additions to ticket prices.
For domestic journeys between 1,001 km and 1,500 km, the revised fuel surcharge has been set at ₹850. Flights covering more than 1,500 km will attract a flat surcharge of ₹1,200.
International routes have also seen higher charges. Passengers flying to North America will face a surcharge of $215, while flights to Australia will attract $210. Travel to Europe, including the UK, will carry a revised surcharge of $135.
The airlines said the revision was made in response to a continued increase in Aviation Turbine Fuel prices and growing pressure on operating costs. ATF can account for around 40% of an airline’s total operating cost, making fuel-price movements a major factor in airfare decisions.
The latest increase comes after IndiGo also revised its fuel surcharge, highlighting broader pressure across the aviation sector from volatile global energy prices. Air India and Air India Express said recent ATF prices have seen significant volatility due to geopolitical developments and sustained stress in global energy markets.
For Air India Express, the revised surcharge applies to new bookings made from 12:00 am on October 9, while for Air India it applies to new bookings from 11:00 am on October 9. Existing bookings made before these timings are not covered by the new surcharge.
The increase means passengers booking fresh tickets with the two carriers will see a higher fuel component included in their final fares. Any further changes are likely to depend on how global energy prices and ATF costs move in the coming weeks.
