Indian para archer Sheetal Devi set a new world record in the Compound Women’s Individual event and advanced to the Asian Para Games final after a dominant semi-final win.
New Delhi, October 20 — Indian para archer Sheetal Devi continued her remarkable run at the Asian Para Games by setting a new world record in the Compound Women’s Individual event.
Competing in the pre-quarterfinals, the 19-year-old scored 149 points from 15 arrows against Hong Kong China’s Chan Yuen Wah, dropping just one point across the entire round.
Her score broke the previous world record of 148 points, which had been set by Great Britain’s Jessica Stretton at the 2019 Para Archery World Championships.
Sheetal later booked her place in the final of the women’s individual compound event by defeating Japan’s Shinohara Aya 145-137 in the semi-final.
She will face Singapore’s Alim Nur Syahidah in the final.
The individual record is not the only major mark Sheetal has set at the continental event.
A day earlier, Sheetal and Toman Kumar created a new world record in the para compound mixed team ranking round, combining for 1,402 points and surpassing the previous record of 1,400.
Toman scored 698 out of 720 in the men’s compound ranking round, while Sheetal contributed 704 points in the women’s qualification round.
Their 1,402-point score bettered the previous world record, which had also been held by Sheetal alongside Rakesh Kumar.
Sheetal also matched the world record and set a new Asian record in the 72-arrow women’s individual qualification round.
She scored 704 out of 720, equalling the world record held by Turkey’s Oznur Cure from the 2024 Paralympics and improving the previous Asian record of 698 by six points.
Her medal campaign remains active across multiple events. Apart from reaching the individual final, Sheetal has also advanced to the women’s doubles semifinals with Payal Nag and the mixed team semifinals with Toman Kumar.
Sheetal entered the Asian Para Games as the defending champion in the women’s individual and mixed team events after winning gold in both at the 2023 edition.
