Patanjali Foods Receives Cow Ghee Recall Order in Madhya Pradesh Over Food Safety Concerns
New Delhi, October 24, 2026: Patanjali Foods Limited has received an order from the Madhya Pradesh Food and Drug Administration (FDA) directing the recall of a specific batch of cow ghee after a sample was found to be non-compliant with prescribed food safety standards.
The FMCG company disclosed the development in a regulatory filing on Saturday, October 24, stating that the order was issued by the Food and Drug Administration in Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh.
According to the filing, the affected batch was classified as unsafe under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Cow Ghee Sample Fails Safety Standards
The recall order concerns a particular batch of cow ghee sold in Burhanpur.
The sample reportedly failed to comply with the Food Safety and Standards regulations governing food products, additives, contaminants, toxins and residues.
The regulator consequently directed the company to recall sales of the affected batch.
The disclosure relates to a specific batch, and the company has not announced a nationwide recall of its cow ghee products.
Patanjali Foods to Challenge Recall Order
Patanjali Foods said it intends to file an appeal against the order issued by the designated officer of the Food and Drug Administration in Burhanpur.
The company also clarified that the development is not expected to have any material impact on its financial performance or operational activities, except for the value of the affected batch.
The company did not disclose the monetary value of the recalled batch in the reported filing.
Food Regulators Intensify Safety Checks
The development comes amid increased regulatory scrutiny of food products and labelling practices across India.
Recently, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) directed Dabur India to stop selling food products carrying certain misleading “100%” claims.
The regulatory action covered several categories, including honey, apple cider vinegar, coconut oil, cow ghee and other products carrying similar claims.
Separately, Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration has intensified inspections against suspected adulterated food products, including dairy products and sweets.
The latest action against Patanjali Foods highlights the importance of compliance with food safety standards, product quality testing and regulatory requirements.
The outcome of Patanjali Foods’ proposed appeal will determine the next stage of proceedings concerning the affected cow ghee batch.
