India Inc’s Overseas Investments Surge 41% to ₹16.71 Lakh Crore, UAE Emerges as Major Growth Driver
New Delhi, November 7: Indian companies significantly expanded their global investment footprint during the financial year ended March 2026, with outstanding outward direct investment (ODI) rising 40.8% to ₹16.71 lakh crore, according to the latest data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
The total value of overseas investments increased by ₹4.85 lakh crore from ₹11.87 lakh crore in March 2025, reflecting a sharp expansion in Indian corporate exposure to international markets.
However, the latest figures also reveal a significant shift in investment destinations and financing patterns, with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) emerging as a major contributor to growth.
UAE Investments Jump 160%
Indian investment exposure to the UAE surged 160% to ₹2.71 lakh crore in March 2026, compared with ₹1.04 lakh crore a year earlier.
The sharp increase pushed the UAE into second place among destinations for Indian overseas investments, ahead of the United States and the United Kingdom.
Debt investments in the UAE recorded particularly strong growth, rising from ₹17,644 crore to ₹1,52,778 crore, an increase of nearly nine times. Equity investments also climbed to ₹1,18,329 crore from ₹86,593 crore.
The UAE contributed approximately 34% of the overall increase in India’s overseas investment stock during the year.
Singapore Retains Top Position
Singapore continued to be the largest destination for Indian outward direct investment, with total exposure increasing 37% to ₹3.53 lakh crore.
The United States ranked third with investments of ₹2.32 lakh crore, followed by the United Kingdom at ₹2.08 lakh crore.
Together, Singapore, the UAE, the US and the UK accounted for 63.6% of India’s total overseas investment stock.
Overseas Debt Investments Nearly Double
The RBI data also highlighted a significant change in the composition of overseas investments.
Equity investments increased 31.8% to ₹13.30 lakh crore, while debt investments nearly doubled from ₹1.77 lakh crore to ₹3.41 lakh crore.
Consequently, the share of debt in total overseas investments increased from 14.9% to 20.4% within a year.
Meanwhile, investments in Mauritius rose 30.4% to ₹1.33 lakh crore, while the Netherlands recorded a 20.1% increase to ₹1.37 lakh crore.
What Does This Mean for Indian Companies?
The sharp rise in overseas investments highlights the growing international financial exposure of Indian businesses. However, the RBI figures represent outstanding investment values rather than fresh capital flows alone.
Exchange-rate fluctuations, asset valuations and financial restructuring can also influence these numbers.
The growing concentration of investments in major financial hubs underscores the importance of transparency and regulatory oversight as Indian companies expand their global operations.
