RBI data shows bank credit increased 17.94% year-on-year to ₹232.54 lakh crore by October 15, exceeding deposit growth of 16.60%.
Bank credit in India grew 17.94 per cent year-on-year to ₹232.54 lakh crore as of October 15, 2026, outpacing deposit growth of 16.60 per cent, according to data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
Bank deposits stood at ₹284.37 lakh crore during the reporting period, compared with ₹243.88 lakh crore on October 17, 2025.
Credit outstanding increased from ₹197.17 lakh crore a year earlier, reflecting stronger lending activity across the banking system.
The higher credit growth was supported by surplus liquidity in the banking system during the early part of October and increased financial activity during India’s festive season. Banks also received substantial foreign currency non-resident bank deposits under the RBI’s concessional window.
System liquidity surplus ranged between ₹2 lakh crore and ₹4.5 lakh crore between October 1 and October 15, according to RBI data.
Meanwhile, banks’ investments in central and state government securities increased 9.64 per cent year-on-year to ₹77.32 lakh crore as of October 15.
The figures indicate continued expansion in bank lending alongside strong deposit mobilisation and increased investments in government securities.
