Domestic GST revenue surged 22.9%, while import-related collections grew 7.4%, reflecting robust consumer spending and economic activity during the festive season.

Highlights

  • Gross GST collections rose 15.9% to ₹2.31 lakh crore in October.
  • Domestic GST revenue increased 22.9% to ₹1.59 lakh crore.
  • Revenue from imports climbed 7.4% to ₹72,000 crore.
  • Net GST collections stood at ₹2.03 lakh crore, up 16.5%.
  • GST refunds increased 3.4% to ₹28,000 crore.
  • Strong festive demand and domestic consumption supported revenue growth.

New Delhi: India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections rose sharply in October 2026, with gross revenue reaching ₹2.31 lakh crore, registering a 15.9% increase compared with the same month last year. The strong growth was primarily driven by domestic consumption, festive-season demand and robust economic activity.

According to official GST data released on November 1, domestic GST revenue recorded particularly strong growth, increasing 22.9% to ₹1.59 lakh crore from ₹1.29 lakh crore in October 2025. The significant rise indicates sustained momentum in consumer spending and domestic business transactions.

Meanwhile, GST collections from imports increased 7.4% to ₹72,000 crore, compared with ₹67,000 crore in the corresponding period last year.

After adjusting for refunds, net GST revenue stood at ₹2.03 lakh crore, representing a 16.5% year-on-year increase. GST refunds during the month rose 3.4% to approximately ₹28,000 crore.

The latest figures highlight the strength of domestic demand, particularly during the festive shopping season. Higher purchases of goods and services, increased retail activity and improved compliance contributed to the revenue expansion.

Domestic Consumption Leads Growth

The sharp increase in domestic collections suggests that household spending and business activity remained resilient despite global economic uncertainties.

Experts believe the sustained improvement in GST revenue reflects both stronger consumption and better tax compliance. Increased use of digital invoicing, improved monitoring systems and greater formalisation of economic activity have helped strengthen revenue collection.

The festive season traditionally witnesses higher consumer spending on automobiles, electronics, household appliances and other discretionary products, supporting indirect tax revenue.

Strong Revenue Signals Economic Resilience

The October GST figures also point towards continued economic momentum, with domestic revenue growing substantially faster than import-related collections.

Economists say sustained GST growth can support government finances by strengthening revenue availability for infrastructure development and public expenditure.

However, the pace of collections in the coming months will remain important in assessing whether the festive demand-led expansion translates into sustained consumption growth.

The latest revenue performance reinforces expectations that domestic demand will remain an important driver of India’s economic growth, even as external uncertainties continue to affect global trade.
