The Maha Kumbh 2025 commenced in Prayagraj today, on the Paush Purnima, drawing an estimated 35 crore devotees to the Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers. Many devotees (nearly 40 lakh) have travelled from across India and the world, for the sacred ritual ‘Shahi Snan’.

The Maha Kumbh festival to be held from January 13 to February 26, will showcase India’s rich cultural heritage and spiritual traditions. Held every 12 years, this edition aligns with rare celestial configurations occurring after 144 years, amplifying its spiritual significance. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath hailed the event as a symbol of India’s rich heritage.

Prayagraj has been transformed into Maha Kumbh Nagar, a 10,000-acre temporary city capable of accommodating up to 1 crore people at a time. Dubbed as “Digi-Kumbh,” the event leverages advanced technology, including AI-powered security systems, digital maps for locating facilities, and live social media monitoring. Security is bolstered by 45,000 police personnel, 55 police stations, and 30 pontoon bridges, ensuring smooth operations and accessibility.

Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh described the Kumbh as a confluence of spirituality, modern infrastructure, and cultural pride. The city’s walls feature Hindu motifs, while roads display religious symbols like kalash and Surya Namaskaar poses, enhancing the festive ambiance.

Thirteen Akharas representing various sects have set up vibrant camps, marked by themed entry gates. The event holds added significance as the first major gathering since the consecration of Lord Ram in Ayodhya in 2024. Lakhs of devotees have already taken the holy dip, particularly on Paush Purnima. Social media is playing a key role, enabling devotees to share experiences and offer virtual darshan, underscoring the blend of tradition and technology.
