Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd (ONGC) has entered into a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd (TPREL) to explore collaboration opportunities in the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) value chain.
Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), India’s energy Maharatna, on 12 February 2025, signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tata Power’s green energy subsidiary-Tata Power Renewable Energy (TPREL)- to explore collaborative opportunities in the battery energy storage system (BESS) value chain. The partnership will focus on various applications across the BESS sector, including utility-scale energy storage, grid stabilization, ancillary services, renewable energy integration, hybrid solutions, industrial and commercial storage applications, micro-grids, backup power solutions, and electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure.
The MoU signing was attended by Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, ONGC Chairman and CEO Arun Kumar Singh, and TPREL CEO and MD Deepesh Nanda.
Arun Kumar Singh, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), ONGC stated, “As India transitions towards a sustainable energy future, ONGC remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing clean energy initiatives. This collaboration with Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited represents a strategic step towards strengthening energy storage capabilities, which are vital for grid stability and renewable energy adoption. By leveraging our collective expertise, we aim to contribute meaningfully to India’s energy transition and long-term energy security.”
This collaboration aligns with India’s target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity by 2030, reinforcing both companies’ commitment to sustainability. TPREL’s expertise in advanced energy storage technologies is exemplified by the successful commissioning of India’s largest Solar and BESS project—a 100 MW solar PV plant with a 120 MWh utility-scale BESS in Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh.
ONGC is India’s largest producer of crude oil and natural gas, accounting for approximately 71% of the country’s domestic production. Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) is a key player in the country’s renewable energy sector, with a diversified portfolio encompassing solar, wind, and hybrid energy projects.
