The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) has teamed up with Bangalore-based NGO Sustain Plus to launch a large-scale circular dairy program. This initiative will see the installation of 10,000 biogas plants across 15 Indian states, including Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar.
Ganesh Neelam, Director Sustain Plus stated, “Our latest with NDDB aims to empower dairy farmers, particularly women, by providing access to clean cooking fuel and nutrient-rich bio-slurry for soil enrichment. We have signed MoUs with over 26 milk unions across 15 states in India.’
The program, introduced at the ‘Workshop on Sustainability and Circularity in the Dairy Sector’ in New Delhi, aims to create climate-smart dairy villages and promote sustainable farming practices. Over the next four years, the biogas digesters will produce 300,000 tonnes of organic slurry annually, reducing the need for chemical fertilizers. Additionally, the project will generate more than seven million cubic meters of biogas, offering clean cooking fuel to 10,000 rural households. The initiative will also produce 60,000 tonnes of phosphate-rich organic manure (PROM), helping to replace chemical phosphate fertilizers.
Through this partnership, NDDB and Sustain Plus aim to benefit dairy farmers by improving manure management, integrating renewable energy, and strengthening dairy infrastructure. The program will reduce input costs, improve soil health, provide clean cooking fuel to rural households, and create new opportunities through organic fertilizers and carbon credits.
