The Karnataka Maritime Board (KMB) has unveiled ambitious plans for the Mangaluru Water Metro Project (MWMP), aiming to transform public transport in Karnataka by establishing an efficient waterway network. This project leverages National Waterways to link areas along the Nethravathi (NW-74) and Gurupura (NW-43) rivers, providing an eco-friendly, cost-effective travel option. Officials highlight that, once complete, this project will be India’s second-largest water transport system after Kochi’s, promoting sustainable travel and easing congestion.
The MWMP aims to bridge isolated communities along a 30-kilometre stretch between Bajal and Maravoor, enhancing connectivity and fostering socio-economic growth in these areas. Improved transport links are expected to boost local livelihoods and elevate the quality of life for residents by offering integrated transit options. The project will roll out in phases, beginning with an initial stretch covering Nethravathi and Gurupura river backwaters, featuring 17 metro stations at key locations.
The primary route will start at Bajal on the Nethravathi River and extend to the Maravoor Bridge on the Gurupura, passing prominent sites like Someshwara Temple, Ullal, and New Mangalore Port. The service will use modern electric and diesel-powered catamaran boats equipped with essential amenities, ensuring both comfort and operational efficiency.
A detailed Feasibility Report (FR) will assess the project’s viability by conducting a cost-benefit analysis, exploring market demand, and evaluating environmental impacts. This report will offer key insights for decision-makers, investors, and stakeholders, outlining the operational strategies and benefits.
The MWMP is positioned to redefine transportation in the region, fostering development and improved accessibility, with the potential to set new standards in sustainable urban transport for Karnataka and beyond.
