According to the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, the output of foodgrain production in India is estimated to increase to 305.43 million tonnes in the crop year 2020-21. The growth would be of 2.66% in comparison to the previous year. Better output of rice, pulses and wheat backed by good monsoon rains last year would support the growth. During 2019-20 crop year (July-June), the food grain output was 297.5 million tonnes, where the output comprised of wheat, rice, pulses and coarse cereals.
Efforts put by farmers and scientists along with the policies of the central government have led to the rise in output, commented Narendra Singh Tomar, Minister of Agriculture.
According to the data, rice production is estimated to be 121.46 million in 2020-21 crop year up from 118.87 million tones in previous year. Wheat production is expected to be 108.75 million tonnes, up from 107.86 million tonnes. Production of coarse cereals estimated to rise to 49.66 million tonnes in crop year 2020-21, up from 47.75 million tonnes during previous year.
