Sustainability has become a crucial strategic focus for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), influencing their long-term value and credibility, according to a recent survey by DHL Express. The survey, conducted across 11 global markets (UK, France, Germany, Netherlands, Australia, China, Singapore, Japan, Mexico, Canada, and India), surveyed 5,000 SME decision-makers to explore the increasing prioritization of sustainability in supply chain operations.

The survey reveals that 95% of Indian SMEs consider sustainability “very important” or “extremely important,” a figure significantly higher than the global average of 75%. This highlights a strong commitment to sustainability among Indian businesses.

Michiel Greeven, Executive Vice President Global Commercial at DHL Express, explained that while many businesses are eager to adopt sustainable practices, developing and implementing a sustainability strategy can be challenging. Partnering with trusted logistics leaders like DHL Express, which offers low-emission shipping solutions, can help SMEs stay competitive and ensure long-term growth.

R S Subramanian, SVP South Asia at DHL Express, emphasized that sustainability has moved beyond being a “nice to have” and is now essential for business growth. Indian SMEs recognize this shift and are taking steps to integrate sustainability into their operations. The survey shows that 51% of Indian SMEs, and 47% of SMEs in China, believe their customers would pay more for sustainable shipping, compared to the global average of 23%. This reflects the growing focus of Indian and Chinese SMEs, especially those involved in exports, in adopting sustainable practices to appeal to Western consumers.

The research covered businesses from various sectors, including retail, consumer goods, professional services, engineering, fashion, technology, chemicals, life sciences & healthcare, and financial services. The findings highlight the importance of sustainability for SMEs, offering valuable insights on how they can navigate the evolving business landscape and embrace new opportunities.
