India and China have taken a significant step towards improving bilateral relations by signing a six-point agreement on December 18. The agreement focuses on initiatives such as resuming the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, facilitating Nathula border trade, and enhancing cross-border river management.

The announcement came after discussions between India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Vice President Han Zheng in Beijing. During the meeting, Han underscored the importance of reviving institutional dialogue and strengthening cooperation in areas like economy, trade, and culture. He highlighted the shared objective of guiding bilateral ties towards stability and constructive growth.

Both nations agreed to intensify cross-border collaboration. Plans include restarting the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra for Indian pilgrims in Tibet, improving cross-border river management, and promoting trade through the Nathula pass. These efforts aim to strengthen people-to-people ties and economic connectivity.

Additionally, both sides decided to hold the next round of Special Representatives’ meetings in India next year, with the schedule to be finalized through diplomatic channels. They emphasized the progress made in resolving border issues and reiterated the importance of adhering to agreed solutions.

Both countries stressed the need to address border concerns within the broader context of bilateral relations, ensuring these challenges do not adversely affect overall ties. They also committed to maintaining peace and stability in border areas while working towards a healthier and more stable relationship. These developments reflect a mutual intent to rebuild trust and cooperation in various spheres, contributing to a stronger partnership.
