India and US boost collaboration on clean energy initiatives

India and the US have strengthened their clean energy partnership, focusing on sustainable aviation fuel, electrification of heavy-duty vehicles, and hydrogen use in transportation. This collaboration aims to boost investments, modernize power distribution, and support India’s renewable energy and carbon reduction goals.

India and the US have agreed to accelerate efforts toward clean energy initiatives, focusing on sustainable aviation fuel, electrification of medium and heavy-duty vehicles, and the use of hydrogen in buses, tractors, and heavy equipment. This decision follows the Strategic Clean Energy Partnership (SCEP) dialogue, led by US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and Indian Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri in Washington, DC.

Both nations emphasized the importance of boosting investments in each other’s clean energy sectors. The joint statement from the SCEP Ministerial underscored their commitment to a sustainable energy transition, ensuring access to reliable and affordable clean energy supplies.

A key area of focus is modernizing India’s power distribution system to provide 24×7 reliable electricity. The partnership welcomed India’s smart metering initiatives and broader efforts to implement power market reforms, improve cybersecurity, and enhance system inertia estimation. They also acknowledged the growing role of inverter-based resources in the country’s energy grid.

In addition, both nations praised Indian Railways’ ambitious goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. They pledged to support India’s renewable energy procurement initiatives, which aim to secure over 1.5 GW of round-the-clock renewable energy, and also agreed to collaborate on energy efficiency policies for railway infrastructure.

The partnership between India and the US demonstrates a shared commitment to fostering clean energy, modernizing critical sectors, and promoting sustainable practices in transportation and power distribution. This cooperation reflects their dedication to achieving long-term energy security and addressing climate change challenges through innovative solutions.
