Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI)’s report states that India needs to relook at the phased manufacturing program. The association feels that the government needs to make its policy export oriented by encouraging local production of components, rather than imposing high import duties. Niti Aayog chairman Amitabh Kant said while showcasing the report, “While India did succeed in attracting some companies to begin assembling phones here, the larger ecosystem comprising the vendors and suppliers of high value components and assemblies did not shift to India.” He agreed that while the nation has so far focused on import substitution, it needs to now focus on enhancing its exports. He also added that the government is committed to creating a very conducive environment for manufacturing electronics goods in India.
