Godrej Agrovet Limited (GAVL) has announced a significant expansion in its Oil Palm Plantation (OPP) business by setting up a Processing Milling unit in Tripura. The new facility will be located in the Dhalai district, where GAVL already operates a nursery with a capacity of 3 lakh saplings per year, with plans to increase this to 5 lakh annually. Alongside the milling unit, the company will establish an advanced Research & Development centre for oil palm in the vicinity, and a Samadhan centre, a one-stop solution centre aimed at providing comprehensive support to oil palm farmers.
This development follows the National Mission on Edible Oil – Oil Palm (NMEO-OP), launched in August 2021, which aims to boost oil palm cultivation across India. In line with this mission, the government of Tripura has committed to bringing at least 7,000 hectares of land under palm cultivation.
Ratan Lal Nath, Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare of Tripura, emphasized the government’s commitment to creating a supportive ecosystem for oil palm farmers. He expressed enthusiasm for the partnership with GAVL, noting that the new processing mill would allow farmers to sell their produce within the state, reducing logistical challenges. Nath also highlighted the importance of the Samadhan centre in supporting both existing and new oil palm farmers.
Balram Singh Yadav, Managing Director of GAVL, expressed gratitude to the Tripura government for their support. He highlighted the potential for this initiative to generate employment, promote associated businesses, and contribute to reducing India’s dependency on imported palm oil. Yadav emphasized that GAVL’s expertise, combined with state support, would significantly benefit Tripura’s oil palm farmers and the broader agricultural sector.
