Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said that electric vehicle (EV) prices in India will match those of petrol vehicles within six months. Speaking at the 32nd Convergence India and 10th Smart Cities India Expo, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting sustainable mobility, indigenous production, and cost-effective transportation.

Gadkari emphasized that the government’s policy framework focuses on import substitution, pollution reduction, and affordability. He highlighted the rapid shift in the automotive industry, where once-hesitant manufacturers are now actively offering EVs across passenger and two-wheeler segments.

A long-time advocate of green mobility, Gadkari has consistently pushed for EV adoption. He previously predicted price parity between EVs and ICE vehicles by 2025, attributing the shift to advancements in battery technology and rising domestic manufacturing. On Wednesday, he shortened that timeline significantly.

Beyond purchase costs, Gadkari has often stressed the affordability of operating EVs. According to him, EVs cost only ₹1 per kilometer to run, compared to ₹5–7 per kilometer for petrol or diesel cars. He argues that even if upfront prices are higher, the long-term savings make EVs more economical and practical for the average consumer.

Gadkari also provided an update on infrastructure progress, stating that the 212-kilometer Delhi–Dehradun access-controlled expressway will be completed within the next three months. He believes infrastructure is key to making India the world’s third-largest economy and underscored the importance of embracing innovation and new technology to cut construction costs.

Reiterating the government’s vision, Gadkari said the future of India’s economy looks promising, especially with its push towards smart cities and smart transport. His confidence in EV affordability and infrastructure expansion marks a significant step in India’s transition toward sustainable development and greener mobility.
