The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers has extended the deadline for enforcing quality control standards for polypropylene (PP) and Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) products. The new implementation date for these regulations is now June 24, 2025.
The Centre has postponed the enforcement of quality control orders (QCOs) for Polypropylene (PP) Materials for Moulding and Extrusion, and Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) Homopolymers. According to the notification issued by the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals in consultation with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the new date has been extended to June 24, 2025.
This extension of the enforcement date, marks the third amendment to the QCO for these materials. Initially, quality control for these chemicals was set to come into effect on December 24, 2025. Once implemented, the import and sale of non-BIS-compliant PP and PVC will be prohibited.
PP and PVC are essential in multiple sectors. PP is used in moulding to create complex shapes for automotive components, home appliances, and packaging, and in extrusion to produce sheets, films, fibers, and profiles. PVC finds applications in construction, particularly for pipes, house siding, and doors and windows, as well as in manufacturing plastic bottles, packaging, and bank cards.
The Indian Polypropylene market is expected to reach US$ 14.8 billion by 2027, as projected by IndustryARC. Meanwhile, Blueweave Consulting anticipates the PVC pipes market in India to grow to US$ 269.85 million by 2029.
