BigBasket launches initiative to make organic food affordable

BigBasket, a Tata Enterprise, has introduced an initiative aimed at making organic food more accessible and affordable by pricing organically grown fruits, vegetables, and staples on par with conventional options. This effort supports over 30,000 farmers and collaborates with more than 2,000 organic growers and 28,000 agri-commodity producers through Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs). With a steady increase in demand for organic products, this initiative not only enhances consumer choice but also promotes sustainable agriculture and farmer livelihoods.

BigBasket, a Tata Enterprise, has launched a new initiative to offer organically grown fruits, vegetables, and staple foods at prices comparable to conventional products. This initiative aims to increase the accessibility and affordability of organic food for consumers while supporting the livelihoods of over 30,000 farmers in its supply chain.

By partnering with more than 2,000 organic fruit and vegetable growers and 28,000 agri-commodity producers through registered Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), BigBasket now provides over 50 varieties of organically grown fruits and vegetables, along with more than 100 grocery staples. This collaboration plays a vital role in the company’s growing organic portfolio.

In the past financial year, the organic category has experienced consistent growth, with sales rising 15-17% month-on-month. Organic products now represent 22% of the company’s staple sales, while organically grown fruits and vegetables have increased by 50%, contributing to 8% of total fresh produce sales.

Seshu Kumar, Chief Buying and Merchandising Officer at BigBasket, mentioned that the price difference between organic and conventional products has traditionally posed a significant barrier for consumers. He explained that by eliminating this cost disparity, they are addressing a key obstacle, enabling more people to enjoy the advantages of organic food. He emphasized that this initiative not only benefits their customers but also empowers farmers by broadening the market for their organic produce.
