India’s organic food market has seen remarkable growth post-pandemic. A 2022 survey conducted across 187 countries practicing organic agriculture by the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) and International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM), revealed India’s cultivation of organic food on 2.6 million hectares, ranking 5th globally. The country has witnessed a 145.1% increase in organic agriculture land under cultivation in the last decade, with 4.43 million organic farmers, the highest globally according to the Economic Survey 2022-23.
In India, the Department of Agriculture, Cooperation, and Farmers Welfare (DAC&FW) has identified specific regions known as Traditional Organic Areas. These areas are targeted for conversion into certified organic production hubs through the implementation of the “Large Area Certification” (LAC) scheme.
Notably, the Union Territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first large contiguous territory spanning 14,491 hectares to receive organic certification under the LAC scheme of the PGS-India certification program. The success in Andaman and Nicobar Islands sets a precedent, and similar initiatives are currently underway in the Union Territory of Ladakh in Jammu & Kashmir.
