Airtel, Jio team up with Starlink to boost high-speed internet in India

India’s internet landscape is on the brink of a significant transformation with the anticipated entry of SpaceX’s Starlink. Reliance subsidiary Jio Platforms and Bharti Airtel have signed agreements with SpaceX to introduce Starlink’s high-speed satellite internet services in the country. However, the service’s availability to Indian consumers remains contingent on SpaceX obtaining the required regulatory approvals.

India is on the brink of a transformative shift in its internet landscape with the anticipated entry of SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service. The high-speed satellite broadband provider has garnered significant interest, particularly in a country where rural connectivity remains a persistent challenge. To accelerate its entry, Starlink has signed agreements with two major Indian telecom players—Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. However, the final rollout is contingent upon securing regulatory approvals from the Indian government.

The Need for Starlink in India

While urban India benefits from high-speed fibre broadband, large rural and remote regions struggle with limited or no connectivity. The country’s internet penetration currently stands at around 47%, leaving over 700 million people without reliable access. Traditional broadband solutions often require extensive ground infrastructure, making them costly and logistically challenging to deploy in remote locations. This is where Starlink’s satellite-based internet technology offers a compelling alternative, delivering connectivity directly from space and bypassing the need for terrestrial infrastructure.

Starlink operates a network of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, which provide high-speed internet with significantly lower latency compared to traditional satellite broadband. The service has already proved successful in several countries, particularly in areas with limited access to conventional broadband networks.

Jio and Bharti Airtel’s Partnerships with SpaceX

In a strategic move, both Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have signed agreements with SpaceX to bring Starlink’s services to India. This development aligns with Jio’s mission to expand digital connectivity nationwide and bridge the rural-urban digital divide.

Jio Platforms Limited, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries, announced that it plans to offer Starlink solutions through its extensive retail network and online platforms. Under this partnership, Jio will not only provide Starlink equipment at its retail outlets but will also set up a dedicated mechanism to support installation, activation, and customer service. The agreement with SpaceX reflects Jio’s broader goal of ensuring that high-speed internet is accessible to enterprises, small and medium businesses, and communities across the country.

Mathew Oommen, Group CEO of Reliance Jio, emphasized the transformative potential of the partnership, stating, “Our collaboration with SpaceX to bring Starlink to India strengthens our commitment and marks a transformative step toward seamless broadband connectivity for all. By integrating Starlink into Jio’s broadband ecosystem, we are expanding our reach and enhancing the reliability and accessibility of high-speed broadband in this AI-driven era, empowering communities and businesses across the country.”

Bharti Airtel, on the other hand, is bringing Starlink’s services through its satellite arm, OneWeb. The competition between Jio-SES (a joint venture between Jio and Luxembourg-based SES) and Bharti-backed OneWeb is expected to keep prices competitive and push technological advancements in satellite broadband services.

Gwynne Shotwell, President and COO of SpaceX, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, saying, “We applaud Jio’s commitment to advancing India’s connectivity. We are looking forward to working with Jio and receiving authorisation from the Government of India to provide more people, organisations, and businesses with access to Starlink’s high-speed internet services.”

Potential Pricing and Speeds for Starlink in India

While Starlink has not officially announced its pricing strategy for India, insights from Bhutan’s Starlink plans offer some clues. In Bhutan, Starlink offers the following pricing and speed models:

  • Residential Lite Plan – Nu 3,000 (₹3,001 approx.) per month
    • Speeds: 23 Mbps to 100 Mbps
    • Suitable for casual browsing, social media, and video streaming.
  • Standard Residential Plan – Nu 4,200 (₹4,201 approx.) per month
    • Speeds: 25 Mbps to 110 Mbps
    • Unlimited data usage for gaming, HD streaming, and video conferencing.

Given India’s higher taxation on foreign digital services—approximately 30%—Starlink’s pricing is expected to be slightly higher than in Bhutan. Analysts estimate that Indian consumers might see plans starting at around ₹3,500-₹4,500 per month, depending on final regulatory decisions and market competition.

Starlink has the potential to offer speeds of up to 220 Mbps in India, making it a viable solution for bridging the connectivity gap in underserved regions. The service’s ability to provide reliable, high-speed internet in remote locations could revolutionize sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, and e-commerce.

Challenges and Regulatory Approvals

Despite the promising potential of Starlink’s entry, SpaceX must navigate India’s regulatory framework before officially launching its services. The Indian government has stringent guidelines for satellite-based internet providers, and approvals for spectrum allocation and foreign direct investment (FDI) in telecom are critical steps in the process.

The involvement of domestic telecom giants like Jio and Airtel could facilitate the approval process and streamline integration into India’s digital infrastructure. However, concerns regarding spectrum allocation, service pricing, and competition with existing broadband providers will likely be key discussion points with regulators.

The Future of Satellite Internet in India

Starlink’s arrival in India, backed by partnerships with Jio and Bharti Airtel, marks a significant milestone in the country’s digital transformation. With rural and remote connectivity still a major challenge, satellite-based broadband solutions could be a game-changer in bridging the digital divide. If Starlink successfully navigates regulatory approvals, its high-speed, low-latency internet service could revolutionize internet access in India, empowering businesses, communities, and individuals alike.

As India moves towards a more connected future, the competition between Starlink, Jio-SES, and OneWeb is expected to drive further innovation and make satellite broadband a crucial component of the country’s digital ecosystem. For millions of Indians living in remote areas, reliable internet connectivity may soon become a reality, unlocking new opportunities for economic growth and development.
